A novel that ends the universe
Death's End is the third and concluding volume of Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, published in China in 2010 as 死神永生 and translated into English by Ken Liu in 2016. Where The Three-Body Problem introduced the Trisolarans and The Dark Forest established the terrifying logic of cosmic silence, Death's End follows Cheng Xin across centuries and dimensions, tracing humanity from near-extinction to the literal end of all space and time.
The novel's scope is extraordinary even by hard-SF standards: it spans millions of years, introduces dimensional reduction as a weapon of war, and closes with the heat death of a reduced universe. That ambition made adaptation difficult. The story did not travel as quickly across media as its predecessors, but when Tencent Video commissioned a live-action series covering the entire trilogy, Death's End finally reached screens as the third act of Three-Body (2023). A dedicated audiobook production exists, but as of mid-2026 no standalone film or game adaptation of Death's End has been released.

Ken Liu's 2016 English translation of Death's End preserves the novel's full philosophical weight, its staggering temporal leaps, and the cold poetry of its ending. No screen version has come close to conveying the dimensional reduction sequences or the final chapters at the edge of all existence. If you only experience this story one way, it has to be the source text.
The underrated entry: the Tencent series earns its runtime
The 2023 Tencent Three-Body series (30 episodes) was largely overlooked in the West but is a sincere and visually committed adaptation. It builds toward the events of Death's End with more patience than Netflix's condensed take, and it is the only screen version that actually reaches the book's territory. Chinese drama pacing is an acquired taste, but for trilogy completionists it is the only game in town.
Manage expectations: Netflix stops far short
Netflix's 3 Body Problem (2024) is a competent adaptation of the first novel, relocated to contemporary Oxford. It is well-produced and accessible, but it covers none of Death's End's material. A useful gateway to the trilogy, but not a representation of the series finale.
