Xbox Cut 3,200 Jobs and Kept Only What Prints Money

3 min read

On July 6, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced 3,200 job cuts, a fifth of the entire Xbox division, and called it "the most significant restructure in Xbox history." Half the cuts land now. The other 1,600 roll out through fiscal 2027, inside a wave of roughly 4,800 cuts across Microsoft. The headcount stings. The studio list stings more.

Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts 2, goes back to its own management in a buyout. So does Compulsion Games, which made South of Midnight. Ninja Theory, the team behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, has been sold. So has Undead Labs, the State of Decay 2 studio. Arkane Lyon's exit waits on a French labor review. Microsoft bought most of these teams in the 2018 to 2021 acquisition wave, back when Xbox pitched itself as a home for studios too odd or too small to survive alone.

Take Sharma at her word and this reads as overdue surgery. She says the business was "not healthy," that Xbox was losing 64 cents for every dollar it invested in its smaller studios. The platform organization ran 14 layers of management. It now caps at 5. You do not flatten nine layers out of a company that was working. If the internal math looked like that, the alternative to cutting was pretending for a few more years that the math would fix itself, and the people caught in a later, uglier collapse would have numbered far more than 3,200.

The studios have a case too. Nobody at Double Fine set the strategy that lost those 64 cents. Microsoft bought these teams with a promise of patronage: make your strange, personal games, we have the deepest pockets in the industry. Psychonauts 2 and Senua's Saga: Hellblade II are what that promise was for. Eight years on, the patron tallied the invoices and handed back the keys. A management buyout is a gentler exit than a shutdown, and Double Fine and Compulsion may end up freer for it. It is still a broken promise with good manners.

The org chart gives the verdict away. After the restructure, Minecraft and King report to Sharma directly. The two money machines sit at the CEO's elbow while the artisans get a sale or severance. Xbox did not shrink this week. It confessed. It is a publisher and a platform landlord now, collecting rent from its biggest franchises and its storefronts, and it will fund creative risk the way any landlord does: on a lease, with references. That may be the healthiest version of this business. It is also the end of the version Xbox spent 2018 asking us to believe in.
