Another Avatar arrives on Friday, October 9. Her world has reason to fear the title. Avatar: Seven Havens introduces Pavi, an Earthbender who inherits the title after Korra in a civilisation scarred by catastrophe. The official premise casts the Avatar as a feared destroyer. That is a better reason to try a new series than spotting familiar props.
It also changes the catch-up question. If you have a few evenings before the premiere, should you return to Avatar: The Last Airbender, revisit The Legend of Korra, or arrive knowing nothing? Our choice is Korra. The original remains a wonderful beginning. The sequel is the more useful preparation for an Avatar whose authority cannot simply be taken for granted.
Korra makes the office of Avatar a subject of argument. Her opponents do not merely want to beat her in a fight. They challenge who should hold power, what spiritual authority means, and whether the world needs the institution she embodies. The fights matter because winning them will not make everyone accept her authority.
That is the thread worth carrying into Pavi's story. Aang gives you the wish that a good person with extraordinary power can restore balance. Korra asks what happens when other people reject your definition of balance. A successor feared for the title itself belongs in that conversation. We are judging the announced premise here. We have not seen the new episodes.
Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko return as co-creators. Their new heroine travels with her long-lost twin, Nisha, through the remnants of a shattered world. I would rather learn how the sisters get along than spend the premiere hunting references. Let the sisters earn your interest before grading every detail against your favourite childhood episode.
There is room to try it without signing away October. Paramount+ begins Book 1 with three episodes on October 9. Further batches arrive on October 16, 23 and 30. Treat the opening trio as a trial, then decide whether Pavi has earned the next evening.
Already watched both earlier shows? Skip the homework. Start Seven Havens on October 9 and let a new Avatar be new. If you do want a refresher, choose Korra and pay attention to who disputes her right to lead.
