Minecraft’s Switch 2 Upgrade Has Fine Print

CrossBinge · 3 min read

Your unfinished castle could soon get a much nicer sunset. Minecraft arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on Tuesday, October 27, with new lighting and shadows to tempt you back into an old world. Choosing an edition takes a little more work.

Before heading to the eShop, check which copy you already own. Then count the people who usually share your television. Those two details matter more than the word Ultimate on a bundle.

Check the copy you own

Owners of digital Minecraft for Switch can claim the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition through Nintendo eShop by January 31, 2027. It is free except in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, where the fees are 100 JPY, 30 NTD and 25 THB respectively.

Cartridge owners do not qualify for that free upgrade. They can use a separate offer available to all existing players: launch the original Switch game on your Switch 2 between October 27, 2026, and January 31, 2027, to receive an in-game invitation to buy the digital Ultimate Collection at a discount. Nintendo's US listing puts both ends of that window at 9 a.m. Pacific.

Deluxe and Ultimate bundle extra content and Minecoins with the game. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack already comes with every edition, so you needn't buy a bigger bundle to get it. A discount on extras you don't want is a poor reason to spend more.

Count the people on the sofa

Vibrant Visuals, the enhanced lighting and shadow effects, is enabled by default. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gets the update too. Mojang's pitch is easy to understand: take somewhere you know well and see it in better light.

Here is the catch for a shared television: Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen. The new edition supports up to four players on one system, but they won't get that visual treatment while playing together. Certain Marketplace worlds and content also exclude it.

For a household that mostly plays on the sofa together, that is a substantial limit on the upgrade's appeal. Paying for Ultimate won't remove it. We haven't tested the Switch 2 edition, so these are the announced features, not a verdict on how smoothly your busiest world will run.

Bring back an old world

Nintendo says Switch worlds can carry across. Cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account, and online multiplayer requires a separate Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check those before arranging a reunion.

Eligible digital owners should claim Standard Edition before the deadline. If you own the cartridge, look at the discounted Ultimate offer and compare it with Standard before paying. For anyone who mainly plays split-screen, new lighting is no reason to buy either one. The extras need to be things you actually want.

Once you've chosen, return to one world you miss and finish something small. That roof has waited long enough.
