The Rings of Power Catch-Up Trap

2 min read

Sauron has a ring to make, and returning viewers have a week to remember how everyone got into this mess. The Rings of Power starts its third season on November 11 with four episodes. Two more follow on November 18, then the final pair on November 25.

The prospect of the forging is an effective invitation back. It is also a temptation to skip ahead. With sixteen earlier episodes available, there is a difference between wanting to see the famous object and wanting to spend another season with the people caught in its history.

Amazon places the new season five years after Eregion’s fall, with Sauron working toward the One Ring. In an original interview with ComicBook, Charlie Vickers described the direction of his character’s story.

I think this season, it’s kind of like his journey to making the Ring.

A famous destination puts pressure on the journey. Recognition gives the forging an easy burst of excitement; the harder job is making us care what it does to everyone else. That is why a little catch-up is worth more than another round of trailer speculation.

If you watched the first two seasons, revisit the season-two finale first. Give yourself that one episode rather than committing to a full restart. Pay attention to the state of the alliances at the end: the new season’s five-year jump carries those consequences forward. If the finale leaves a relationship fuzzy, go back from there.

For newcomers, season one remains the sensible entrance. The time jump is no reason to assume a clean start, and a sprint through sixteen episodes would turn an enormous fantasy into an obligation. Let the new season arrive while you catch up at your own pace.

For returning viewers, put the finale of The Rings of Power in this week’s queue. Remembering why someone trusts the wrong person is more useful preparation than memorising another map.
