Abigail Spencer
Abigail Spencer is an actor, born 1981.
Daytime soap is a fast, unglamorous school, and it is where Spencer learned the job: two years on All My Children as Rebecca Tyree, starting in 1999. The Lifetime crime series Angela's Eyes followed in 2006, and then a decade of the kind of credits that keep an actor visible without ever quite defining her, Dana Scott on Suits, small parts in Cowboys and Aliens, This Means War and Oz the Great and Powerful.
Rectify is the reason to take her seriously. From 2013 to 2016 she played Amantha Holden as abrasive and unsatisfiable, a woman who keeps pushing after everyone around her has settled into a quieter and more socially convenient kind of grief. Spencer never softens her or asks you to like her, which is the hardest choice available in that part, and it earned a Critics' Choice nomination. It is also the least seen good thing on her resume.
Timeless gave her the opposite assignment, a history professor dropped into a weekly time-travel adventure, where the job is to sell exposition and moral stakes at speed without becoming a lecture. She is good at that too. The pattern is clear enough: film has used her as decoration, television has given her the leads, and she has now gone back to it again with Best Medicine.

Where to start with Abigail Spencer
Rectify first, and it is not close. It is the best show she has been in, the best performance she has given, and one of the quietest American dramas of the last decade, so Rectify is the only starting point that makes the case for her.
After that, Timeless shows the commercial version of the same skill, an actor holding a genre premise together through sheer conviction. True Detective and Suits are worth a look mostly to see how much she does with very little screen time. Her features are thinner: This Is Where I Leave You is the one with actual material in it, and Oz the Great and Powerful is the one people have seen. If you want the current version of her, Best Medicine is where she is working now.
The dramatic leads
Rectify is the essential one, four seasons of the best-reviewed American drama of its decade watched by almost nobody, with her as the sister holding a family together by force of will.
The recurring television
Where most viewers will have encountered her, a few episodes at a time across more than a decade of American series. Suits is the widest-reaching of them and True Detective the most prestigious, though neither gives her much room.
