Adjoa Andoh
Adjoa Andoh is an actor, born 1963.
Adjoa Andoh came up through the theatre and never really left it. She is an actress and a stage director, and the discipline shows in everything she does on screen: she is one of the few television performers who can end another character's sentence for them simply by pausing.
Her first wide exposure came in BBC soaps, EastEnders between 1990 and 1991 and Casualty, followed by Doctor Who, where she played Francine Jones across 2007 and 2008. British crime television then kept her extremely busy, in Wire in the Blood, Scott and Bailey, Law and Order UK, Liar and The Interceptor, which is the sort of run that builds a reputation among casting directors without ever building a public profile.
Invictus, in 2009, was the film that made her recognisable outside the UK. The real shift came in 2020 with Bridgerton, where Lady Agatha Danbury turned out to be the most quotable part in an enormously popular show and was substantial enough to justify the prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, in 2023.
The other strand of her career is vocal. Colonel Casey in Thunderbirds Are Go, Ruth in Testament: The Bible in Animation, Grandmother Smoo in The Smeds and the Smoos, and the Judge in Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Born in Bristol in 1963, she has become the rare character actor whose voice alone is bankable.

Where to start with Adjoa Andoh
Practically speaking, everybody arrives via Bridgerton, and Lady Danbury justifies it. The part shows exactly what she is for: authority delivered at conversational volume, and a comic timing that most of the cast around her cannot match.
Then go to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which is the better piece of writing and gives the same character a past worth having. If costume drama is not your thing, Invictus is the serious film credit, playing a chief of staff in a story about a country negotiating with itself.
Doctor Who is where a generation first noticed her, and Francine Jones is a rare thing in that series: a parent written as an obstacle with a point. Liar and Scott & Bailey cover the crime-drama years, and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is a delightful two minutes of pure voice.
