Alain Moussi

Alain Moussi is, born 1981.

Alain Moussi was born in Libreville, Gabon, and works out of Canada as an actor, stuntman and martial artist, trained in jujitsu, kickboxing and karate. The way in was stunt work, and the credits here still carry its fingerprints: an uncredited Celtic gladiator in Pompeii, a role listed simply as Logan Stunt Double in Erased, a survivalist in The Day.

The lead roles arrived with the Kickboxer reboot. He plays Kurt Sloane in Kickboxer: Vengeance and Kickboxer: Retaliation, taking over a part Jean-Claude Van Damme originated and playing opposite Van Damme, who appears as his mentor in the new films. A further entry, Kickboxer: Armageddon, has him back in the role. He also led Jiu Jitsu in 2020 as Jake, played Charlie Nash in the web series Street Fighter: Resurrection, and played Batman in the first season of Titans.

What he offers a director is simple and rare: the fights can be shot wide and held long, because the performer can actually do them and nothing needs hiding in the edit. The acting is less developed than the movement, which the Kickboxer films solve by surrounding him with people who chew scenery. Recent credits include King of Killers and Infiltrate.

Where to start with Alain Moussi

Go in through Kickboxer: Vengeance, and watch it for the choreography rather than the plot: the film exists to put Moussi in front of Jean-Claude Van Damme and let the two of them work.

Kickboxer: Retaliation is the better of the pair, with longer fights and a deeper bench of fighters, and Kickboxer: Armageddon continues the run. Jiu Jitsu is the strangest thing here, a martial-arts picture that crosses into science fiction, and it gives him the lead. For the stunt years, Pompeii and Erased show what he was doing before the billing arrived, and The Art of Action has him talking about the craft itself.
