Anabel Hernández

Anabel Hernandez Garcia is a Mexican investigative journalist and author who reports on drug trafficking and, more dangerously, on the officials accused of protecting it. Her work covers alleged collusion between government figures and cartel leaders, along with slave labour, sexual exploitation and abuse of state power. In 2012 she received the Golden Pen of Freedom, awarded annually by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers and usually given to reporters working under direct threat. She is best known internationally for Narcoland, her account of the political protection behind the Mexican drug trade, and she has continued reporting on the same networks since.

Where to start with Anabel Hernández

Narcoland is the book she is known for and it is absent from this catalogue, so start with The Sorrows of Mexico, the anthology where she writes alongside other Mexican reporters covering the same war; her essay there is the clearest short statement of her method. Ira de México / the Wrath of Mexico is the same collection in Spanish. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown puts her on camera, which is a gentler way in.
