Broadway is where Annaleigh Ashford does her real work, and the screen career fits around it. She came up through the musicals: Wicked in 2007, Legally Blonde the same year, Hair in 2010. The Tony arrived for a play rather than a musical, Best Featured Actress for Essie Carmichael in You Can't Take It with You, and the nominations came for two very different musical parts, Lauren in Kinky Boots and Mrs. Lovett in the 2023 Sweeney Todd.
On screen she plays people who are slightly out of sync with the room and completely unbothered about it. Betty DiMello in Masters of Sex is the clearest case, the character who says the plainest thing in every scene and is usually the one who turns out right. Her Paula Jones in American Crime Story works the same way with the sympathy inverted, a real person handled without condescension in a series that could easily have made her a punchline.
The film parts have mostly been small and sharply cut: Mimi Mismatch in Late Night, Crystal in Unicorn Store, Jenny Aquila in Bad Education. Unbelievable gave her Lilly Darrow in a series with no room for comic relief, and she adjusts completely. Television has kept coming back, through The Undoing, Welcome to Chippendales and Happy Face. The filmography reads exactly like a stage actor's: everyone's favorite third-billed performer, still doing the biggest work eight blocks away.

Where to start with Annaleigh Ashford
Go to Masters of Sex first, and specifically to Betty. Ashford turns a recurring role into the most reliable pleasure in a series that is otherwise fairly solemn about itself, and the comic timing is the best thing in it.
After that, American Crime Story for the dramatic register: her Paula Jones is a difficult piece of casting handled with more care than the material demanded. Unbelievable shows the same restraint in a bleaker key.
For the comedy, Late Night and Bad Education give her a few minutes each and she takes all of them. The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again is where her stage skill set is most visible on film, though the production around her is thin. The theatre work her reputation actually rests on, the Tony and the two nominations, is not something a streaming queue can supply, which is the standard problem with Broadway performers.
