Anne Weale
Anne Weale was an author.
More than eighty-eight books for Mills & Boon, published between 1955 and 2002. That is the whole shape of the career: nearly half a century inside one house, under the pen names Anne Weale and Andrea Blake, written by a British newspaper reporter named Jay Blakeney.
The reporter's training shows in the books, which are travel writing with a plot attached, built out of places she had actually been. By her own account it was a year spent on the edge of a Malaysian jungle early in her marriage that pushed her toward the genre at all. Four titles are listed here and they span thirty-six years, which makes them a useful cross-section of how the house style shifted around a writer who stayed put.
She was working on an autobiography, under the title 88 Heroes ... 1 Mr Right, when she died in 2007.

Where to start with Anne Weale
Choose by era, because none of the four titles here is a natural front door. Girl About Town is the earliest and the most instructive if you want to hear what the genre sounded like before the 1970s rewrote it, manners and restraint doing the work later books hand to heat.
The singing tree and The Bartered Bride are the mature Weale, written deep inside a formula she understood better than almost anyone then working in it. Taming the Playboy is late, and the title alone tells you the house was chasing a brasher market by 2001.
