Aoi Yuuki

Aoi Yuuki is an actor, born 1992.

Aoi Yuuki, born Aoi Yabusaki in Chiba in 1992, is one of the busiest voice actors in Japan, with well over two hundred credits behind her and a career that started when she was a child. She is signed to Aoni Production and works as a singer alongside the voice acting.

Her signature is a specific and slightly unnerving trick: a bright, small, unmistakably childlike voice with something entirely adult operating behind it. Madoka Kaname in Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the version everyone knows, a gentle middle schooler carrying a series that keeps punishing gentleness. Tanya von Degurechaff in The Saga of Tanya the Evil is the same instrument turned inside out, a cold career officer speaking through a small girl's throat, and the premise only works because Yuuki commits to both halves at once. Terrible Tornado in One Punch Man is the comic version of the same idea.

She is just as reliable in the warmer register: Tsuyu Asui across the whole of My Hero Academia, Diane in The Seven Deadly Sins, Tamaki Kotatsu in Fire Force, Lucy in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. She has also voiced Lumine in Genshin Impact, Hibiki Tachibana in Symphogear and Nodoka Hanadera in Healin' Good Pretty Cure, which between them cover two enormous audiences that most Western viewers never see her reach. Very little of her work is in English, and none of it needs to be.

Where to start with Aoi Yuuki

Watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica before anything else, and not only because it is the famous one. It is the clearest demonstration of what she does, a voice that stays gentle while the show around it stops being gentle at all.

Then go straight to Saga of Tanya the Evil for the opposite pole; the contrast tells you more about her range than any showreel could. My Hero Academia is the long running comfort watch. A Silent Voice: The Movie holds her best single film performance, a small supporting part played with real restraint, and ERASED is where you go to hear her do fear. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the modern pick, and The Apothecary Diaries is where new listeners are finding her now.

The roles that show the sweet-and-unsettling range

She is the person Japanese animation calls when a character needs to be gentle and genuinely disturbing in the same breath. Ochaco in My Hero Academia is the warm end, and the darker series show how far the other direction goes.

The films everyone has seen

The Shinkai and Kyoto Animation features are where most Western viewers have heard her without knowing it. A Silent Voice is the most emotionally demanding work here, and Your Name is simply the most watched.

The long-running series and the recent work

Diane in Seven Deadly Sins and the Pokemon run are the steady jobs, and Cyberpunk Edgerunners and The Apothecary Diaries are the recent showcases that brought her to a new audience entirely.
