Beth Orton
Beth Orton was singing on records by William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers before she made her own, and Trailer Park in 1996 put an acoustic guitar and a folk voice on top of programmed beats at a moment when nobody was doing that. The press called it folktronica, which she has never liked. She won a Brit Award, largely disappeared for stretches, and has kept making records that sound less like anyone else each time.

Where to start with Beth Orton
Trailer Park is the debut and the record the reputation rests on. Central Reservation is the better album and won the Brit, quieter and more assured. Daybreaker is the most electronic of the three and the one that divided the audience, and Broken English is a documentary appearance rather than a record.
