Big Freedia
The music is the career. Freddie Ross Jr., performing as Big Freedia, is the rapper and singer most associated with New Orleans bounce, the local hip hop style that had stayed largely underground since it developed in the early 1990s, and she is widely credited with carrying it out to a national audience.
The screen credits are small and almost all of them lean on that public identity rather than asking for a performance. She appears as Big Freedia in Self/less and under her own name as Freddie Ross in Song to Song, a film built around musicians and the scenes they move through. Two later parts do give her characters to play, Dixie in The Hammer and a tarot reader in the 2025 indie Fucktoys, but nobody is casting her for range. They are casting her for a voice and a presence that are already famous, and the films get exactly what they asked for.

Where to start with Big Freedia
Of the four films here, Song to Song is the one worth an evening. It is a loose, drifting film about the music business, and she registers in it as a real person from a real scene rather than as decoration, which is more than most musician cameos manage.
Self/less is the widest-release credit and the smallest part, a science-fiction thriller in which she appears as herself. The Hammer gives her an actual character in Dixie, and Fucktoys is the recent independent oddity for anyone tracking every appearance.
Honestly, though, the films are the footnote here. The bounce records are the body of work, and anyone arriving from the filmography should go and listen to them instead.
