Bronagh Waugh
Bronagh Waugh is an actor, born 1982.
Four years on a Channel 4 soap is an odd launchpad, but it is a real one, and Waugh used it properly. She played Cheryl Brady on Hollyoaks from 2009 to 2013 and drew three British Soap Award nominations in 2010 alone, for newcomer, actress and comedy performance, which tells you she was doing something the format does not usually reward: playing broad and precise at once.
Since leaving, she has worked almost entirely in British and Irish crime drama, and has quietly become one of its more useful faces. The role that makes the case is Sally Ann Spector in The Fall, the wife of the man the series is hunting. It is a part with no agency and enormous exposure, and Waugh plays her as somebody slowly running out of ways to not know what she knows. Nothing about it is showy and it is the best work on this page.
The pattern since has been steady rather than starry: Charlotte Proctor in Des, DI Carol Farman in Ridley, DI Shona Sinclair in The Stolen Girl, plus Unforgotten and Strike, which are not among the credits listed here. She has climbed the call sheet without a single obvious breakout, which in British television usually indicates a long career rather than a short one.

Where to start with Bronagh Waugh
The Fall first, without hesitation. Her scenes carry most of the series' moral weight, and the whole thing is a better piece of work for having somebody play the ordinary domestic side of it this well. After that, Des is the strongest of her supporting turns, a restrained true crime drama that declines every chance to sensationalise.
Ridley and The Stolen Girl are where she carries rank and screen time, comfortable Sunday night crime, well made and not much more. The Suspect and Art Detectives belong on the same shelf. Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar is the outlier with the most curious premise, and A Dark Place is the small independent film for anyone who wants her further from the procedural machine.
