Caitlin R. Kiernan is an Irish born American writer of science fiction and dark fantasy who trained and worked as a paleontologist, which shows in prose that is precise about bones, rock and deep time. The output runs to ten novels, several comics series, and more than 250 short stories, novellas and vignettes, and the short fiction is where the reputation properly sits. Kiernan has won the World Fantasy Award and the Bram Stoker Award twice each, plus a Locus Award for short story. The horror is atmospheric and unreliable rather than gory.

Where to start with Caitlín R. Kiernan
The drowning Girl is the one to read first and the best thing here, a narrator writing her way through her own unreliability, with a ghost story that refuses to settle into one shape. Agents of Dreamland is the Cosmic Horror novella, faster and colder. Children of Lovecraft puts the shorter work next to its obvious peers, which is the fairest way to meet it.
