CAN
CAN is a musician.
Can were a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968 by the bassist Holger Czukay and the keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, both students of Karlheinz Stockhausen, with the guitarist Michael Karoli and the drummer Jaki Liebezeit. Their method was to play for hours and edit the results into tracks, which is why the records sound simultaneously improvised and precisely built. Liebezeit's drumming is the engine of all of it. The band ran through two very different singers, the American Malcolm Mooney and the Japanese Damo Suzuki.

Where to start with CAN
Tago Mago is the essential one, a double album that runs from tight funk to twenty minutes of tape collage. Ege Bamyası is the tightest and the easiest first listen. Future Days is the gentlest, closer to ambient music than to rock, and Monster Movie is the raw early record with Malcolm Mooney singing.
