Caterina Scorsone
Caterina Scorsone is an actor, born 1981.
Very few actors get to keep one character for as long as Caterina Scorsone has kept Amelia Shepherd. Born in Toronto in 1981, she started as a child on the Canadian programme Mr. Dressup, which is about as early a start as television offers, and worked through Canadian and American series from there: a Goosebumps episode as Jessica Walters, Jess Mastriani in Missing, and the title role in Alice, a fantasy miniseries that sends a grown Alice Hamilton back to Wonderland.
Amelia arrived on Private Practice and then moved with her to Grey's Anatomy and Station 19, which is an unusual amount of continuity for a supporting character. The role is written as a neurosurgeon of real ability with a life that keeps coming apart, and what Scorsone does with it is refuse to soften either half. She plays the competence dead straight, technical and unhurried, and lets the damage sit alongside it rather than shading the whole performance with it. That is harder than it sounds on a show that runs for years and would happily accept a simpler version.
Her film work is thinner and less interesting: Melissa in Edge of Darkness, Celia in The November Man, parts that ask for a scene or two of tension and nothing else. The television is where the actual work is.

Where to start with Caterina Scorsone
Begin at Private Practice, where Amelia Shepherd is introduced, rather than jumping straight into her long run on Grey's Anatomy. The character makes far more sense in order, and the earlier show gives her more room per episode.
Alice is the one to try if you want to see her carry something on her own. It is a strange, slightly cheap fantasy miniseries and she is the only reason it holds together. Missing is standard-issue procedural television with a decent hook, worth an episode to see her early screen presence. For the film side, Edge of Darkness and The November Man are brief but competent, and Goosebumps is a curiosity from her childhood work rather than a recommendation.
