Chris Cooper
Chris Cooper is an actor, born 1951.
Cooper came up on stage and broke through on television, as Sheriff July Johnson in Lonesome Dove in 1989. The most important relationship of his career is with John Sayles, who cast him as a union organiser in Matewan in 1987 and then again in City of Hope, Lone Star and Silver City. Lone Star is where the whole method becomes visible.
That method is repression. Cooper specialises in men who have organised their entire lives around not saying one particular thing, and he plays the not-saying rather than the thing itself: Colonel Fitts in American Beauty, the FBI traitor Robert Hanssen in Breach, the father in October Sky who cannot approve of his son out loud. The face barely moves. What you end up watching is the cost of holding it still.
Which is why Adaptation. is so startling, and why it won him the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for supporting actor. John Laroche has no filter at all, all teeth and theories, and Cooper plays him at full volume with obvious pleasure. It remains the funniest thing on his resume. Since then he has mostly worked as the character actor senior directors call when a film needs ballast: Conklin in The Bourne Identity, plus Seabiscuit, Capote, Syriana, The Town, Little Women, and Smokey in Cars 3, where the voice does the entire job on its own.

Where to start with Chris Cooper
The Oscar-winning performance is the least representative thing in the filmography, which is exactly what makes Adaptation. a fun place to open: it is his loudest work by a mile, a Florida orchid obsessive with no impulse control and worse teeth. Watch that, then watch Lone Star for the real instrument. John Sayles gets his best work, and Matewan is where the partnership starts.
October Sky is the one to hand anybody who thinks he only plays hard men. The father there is a hard man, but the film is about what that costs everyone near him. Breach is his best lead role, a real traitor played as a devout bore. American Beauty holds his most uncomfortable work. Lonesome Dove and Little Women bracket the career at either end, and both let the warmth he usually hides come through.
The leads
The films where he carries it. John Sayles cast him three times, and Lone Star is the best of those and one of the great American films of the nineties. Breach gives him Robert Hanssen and is quietly chilling.
The men about to break
The register he owns: a man who has swallowed something and is running out of room to keep it down. Colonel Fitts in American Beauty is the definitive version, and Adaptation won him the Oscar for the funniest variation.
The studio work
Big films where he is the reliable one, often in three or four scenes. Seabiscuit is the warmest of them, The Bourne Identity gives him the first villain of that series, and Little Women is the recent gentle one.
