Christopher Buckley
Christopher Taylor Buckley is an American novelist and political satirist who learned Washington from the inside: he served as chief speechwriter to Vice President George H. W. Bush before turning the city into material. The novels come at politics through its professional liars and middle managers, among them Thank You for Smoking, Little Green Men, The White House Mess, No Way to Treat a First Lady, Wet Work, Florence of Arabia, Boomsday, Supreme Courtship and The Judge Hunter. He also wrote Losing Mum and Pup, a memoir about his parents, which is the least jokey thing he has published.

Thank you for smoking is the one to read first and the one people quote, a tobacco lobbyist narrating his own week with total professional calm. Florence of Arabia is the sharpest of the later satires. God is my broker is the strangest, a monastery discovering the wisdom literature of finance. The relic master leaves Washington entirely for the sixteenth century, and works better than that sounds.
