Craig Mazin

Craig Mazin is a writer, born 1971.

Mazin spent the first half of his career in broad studio comedy. Our records hold The Specials (2000) and Superhero Movie (2008), both of which he directed, plus an appearance as himself in a retrospective about The Hangover films. It is not a resume that predicts what came next.

Chernobyl (2019) is among the sharpest pieces of writing television has produced, and it works by refusing the usual disaster grammar. There is no hero scientist outrunning a fireball. There are meetings, measurements, and men deciding whether to say a number out loud, and the horror comes from the gap between what is true and what can be admitted. It won him Primetime Emmys for the writing and for the limited series itself.

The Last of Us, co-created with Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog and running since 2023, applies the same discipline to a video game adaptation, a category that had not previously rewarded discipline. The through line across both is a distrust of the heroic shortcut, which is a strange thing to inherit from a career in spoof comedy and probably explains why he is so good at the hard version. He also has an acting credit, as Lou in Mythic Quest, the only light thing on this page.

Where to start with Craig Mazin

Chernobyl first, and probably Chernobyl only if you are short on time. It is short, has no filler, and makes the best argument anyone has made for the miniseries as a form; it is also the clearest statement of what Mazin does, which is dramatize the cost of institutional lying. The Last of Us is the natural follow-up and the more commercial piece of work, with the same allergy to easy heroics. After that the page becomes archaeology: Superhero Movie is a spoof from the era when spoofs still got theatrical releases, The Specials is the odder and more interesting of the two comedies, and Mythic Quest has him in front of the camera as Lou, which is a curiosity and nothing more.
