Elizabeth Vargas

Elizabeth Vargas is an actor, born 1962.

Elizabeth Vargas is a television journalist, born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1962. She anchored ABC's newsmagazine 20/20 and the network's news specials for fourteen years, moved on 28 May 2018 to A&E Networks as lead investigative reporter and documentary anchor, hosted Fox's 2021 revival of America's Most Wanted, and now anchors Elizabeth Vargas Reports on NewsNation out of New York.

Her credit list is what happens when a news anchor gets catalogued alongside actors. 20/20 and World News Tonight are her actual job rather than performances, and the years attached to those rows, 1978 and 1948, are the franchises' start dates, not hers. America's Most Wanted is not among the credits listed here.

The genuine acting amounts to two appearances as a version of herself: an anchor in the science fiction film Life, and a character called Elizabeth Vargas in the political comedy Graves. Newsreaders playing newsreaders is a small and slightly strange genre, and she is a natural at it for the obvious reason.

Where to start with Elizabeth Vargas

The work to watch is the journalism, so 20/20 is the starting point: decades of long-form investigative television, and the format she is most identified with.

Life is a fun spot-the-anchor moment inside an efficient, nasty little space horror film, and Graves is the more interesting cameo of the two because the show is a satire of political reputation and it uses a real journalist's authority as part of the joke. World News Tonight with David Muir rounds out the newsroom side.
