She published several quiet literary thrillers before Station Eleven (2014), a novel about a travelling Shakespeare company after a pandemic, which has been translated into 33 languages and adapted as an HBO Max limited series. The Glass Hotel (2020) followed, appearing on Barack Obama's list of favourite books that year, and Sea of Tranquility (2022) entered the New York Times bestseller list at number three. Her later books share characters and settings without ever quite forming a series.

Where to start with Emily St. John Mandel
Station Eleven is the one to read first and it earns its reputation, though the collapse chapters matter less than the theatre company holding itself together. Sea of Tranquility is the strangest and the most personal, a time travel novel that is really about writing a pandemic book during a pandemic. Last night in Montreal is the early one, slighter, and worth picking up only after the others.
