Franka Potente
Franka Potente is an actor, born 1974.
Potente came out of German cinema at speed. Her first film, the 1995 comedy After Five in the Forest Primeval, won her a Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actress, and three years later Run Lola Run made her internationally famous on the strength of one very short film. She took a BAMBI Award for Best Actress for it, and a Bavarian Television Award nomination followed for the television film Opernball.
Lola is a physical performance almost without dialogue, and it has slightly obscured what she is actually best at, which is watchfulness. Marie in The Bourne Identity works because she is doing the thinking the film cannot afford to explain: a woman calculating, in real time, how much danger she has agreed to. Barbara in Blow is played the same way, warm and appraising, and the effect is that she raises the credibility of whoever she is standing next to.
Hollywood did not hold her, and she seems to have preferred it that way. The years since have been an unusually international patchwork: the German horror films Anatomy and its sequel, Che: Part Two, the border thriller The Bridge, Taboo, The Conjuring 2 as a sceptical investigator, Dark Winds, the German road comedy 25 km/h, and voice work as a vampire queen in Castlevania: Nocturne. It is not a career built for maximum visibility. It is a career built by someone choosing.

Where to start with Franka Potente
Run Lola Run first, obviously, and not only for the reputation. It is short, it is structured as a set of variations, and her performance is the thing holding a formal experiment together.
Then The Bourne Identity, where she is the audience's way into a film about a man with no interior life, followed by Blow for the American studio version of her. Anatomy is the German genre film worth digging out, a medical horror picture with a nasty clean streak.
For the later work, The Conjuring 2 gives her the sceptic role in a very loud haunted house, The Bridge and Dark Winds are the television to try if you want her doing slow menace, and Castlevania: Nocturne is the outlier: pure voice, and she is having an enormous amount of fun.
