Gabriel Porras
TV Azteca, telenovelas, supporting parts opposite established stars: Gabriel Porras, born Carlos Gabriel Porras Flores, came up the standard Mexican route. He worked with Lucia Mendez on Tres veces Sofia and appeared in El tio Alberto before Telemundo handed him his first leading role, in El alma herida, opposite Itati Cantoral, with whom he was involved off screen as well.
What he has settled into since is the seasoned melodrama lead: the man with a past, the one asked to carry the moral weight of a plot that is otherwise moving very fast. Without Breasts There Is No Paradise, Corazon Valiente, Under the Same Sky and Olvidarte Jamas are all variations on that job, spread across two decades of network melodrama, and he is reliable in it in a way the genre depends on and rarely praises.
He works in film occasionally. The one most people outside the telenovela audience have seen is Under the Same Moon, the 2007 border drama, where he plays Paco. In 2017 he played Don Pedro Rivera in Jenni Rivera: Mariposa de Barrio, the biographical series about the singer, which is a different kind of assignment: a real man, with a real family watching.

Where to start with Gabriel Porras
Under the Same Moon is the place to start, because it is the one film here that stands entirely outside the telenovela world: a small, sincere immigration drama in which Porras does real work in a supporting part.
For the television, Without Breasts There Is No Paradise is the strongest and the toughest, a crime melodrama with more grit than the format usually carries. Corazon Valiente is the glossier, more conventional option and the easier watch of the two. Jenni Rivera: Mariposa de Barrio is the interesting one if you know the music, since it is built around a real family and he is playing its patriarch.
Under the Same Sky and Olvidarte Jamás are for viewers who already like the genre and want more of it, and Prisoner is the earliest credit here, mostly of archival interest now.
