George MacDonald is an author.
George MacDonald was a Congregational minister who lost his pulpit for preaching that God's love extended further than his congregation wanted, and turned to writing instead. He effectively invented modern fantasy: Lewis Carroll showed him Alice first, C.S. Lewis called him his master, and Tolkien and Chesterton both said much the same. The children's books are strange and unresolved in a way Victorian children's fiction was not supposed to be.

Where to start with George MacDonald
The catalogue is missing The Princess and the Goblin and Phantastes, which are the two to look for elsewhere. At the Back of the North Wind is here and is the essential one, a book about a boy and the wind that is a great deal sadder than its reputation. The laird's inheritance comes from the Scottish novels, and Classic Christmas Stories and Undine are anthology appearances.
