Gloria Foster
Gloria Foster is an actor, born 1933.
Gloria Foster was a stage actress who made films occasionally, in that order. Born in Chicago in 1933, she built her reputation off Broadway and on it, in work like In White America and Having Our Say, and won three Obie Awards over the course of that career. The screen credits are few enough to list, and she seems to have chosen them the way a theatre actor does, by the part rather than the payday.
The earliest is Nothing But a Man (1964), where she plays Lee in a small independent drama about Black life in the American South. Three years later she turned up as Mrs. Philipot in The Comedians. Television used her sparingly through the late sixties, on The Mod Squad, The Outcasts and The Bill Cosby Show, and in 1985 she played Camille Bell in The Atlanta Child Murders, the mother of one of the victims. City of Hope (1991) gave her Jeanette, one thread in a crowded municipal tapestry.
Then, at 65, she became the face of a franchise. The Oracle in The Matrix is a woman in an apartment kitchen who smokes, bakes and offers the hero a cookie while telling him things that rearrange his life. It is almost entirely exposition, and Foster plays it as warmth rather than mystique, which is why it works. She died in 2001; The Matrix Reloaded, released in 2003, was her last film.

Where to start with Gloria Foster
Most people arrive here for The Matrix, and the Oracle scene holds up better than the rest of the film's philosophy because Foster refuses to play a prophet. She plays a woman in a kitchen who is slightly bored by knowing everything.
For actual acting, Nothing But a Man is the one. It is a quiet 1964 drama that treats its characters as adults, and her scenes carry decades of implication in very few lines. The Atlanta Child Murders is the hardest watch here, a 1985 miniseries in which she plays the mother of one of the victims. City of Hope and The Comedians are supporting turns worth finding if you are working through the whole list.
Save The Matrix Reloaded for last. Her scene in it is brief, and knowing it was the last thing she filmed gives the sequel a weight the script never earned.
