Born in Queens in 1943, she has cast more than 190 film and television projects, mostly alongside her longtime partner Janet Hirshenson, and the films she is known for amount to a sizeable chunk of the modern American mainstream: Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, A Few Good Men, Apollo 13, The Princess Bride, Ghost, Home Alone.
Casting is the least understood creative job in film. It is not a talent search so much as a long argument about tone: who this character should sound like, which unknown can hold a scene opposite a star, which famous face would tip a delicate film into the wrong genre entirely. Children are the hardest version of the problem, because they have to be found rather than chosen, and the ones she found are still on screen decades later.

Where to start with Jane Jenkins
Be honest about what is here: the four titles attached to Jenkins are walk-ons, not the work she is known for. A Beautiful Mind and Backdraft are Ron Howard films she appears in briefly, Frances is the earliest, and Welcome to Hollywood casts her as a casting director in a low-budget industry satire, which is at least fitting.
To actually see her work, watch any of the films she cast and pay attention to the supporting players and the children, where a casting director's judgement is most exposed and least credited. The nine-year-old who has to carry a blockbuster, the character actor who makes a two-line part memorable, the star who was not obvious until the film existed: that is the job. Then watch ten minutes of a badly cast film, and the difference stops being abstract.
