Jay Ellis
Jay Ellis is an actor, born 1981.
South Carolina born, Ellis got his first substantial part in 2013 on the BET series The Game, then spent the whole run of Insecure, from 2016 to 2021, as Lawrence, a role that won him an NAACP Image Award and made him one of the most argued-about characters on television.
Lawrence is the best thing on his page precisely because he is not likeable in the way the show initially sells him. Ellis plays a man whose self-image runs slightly ahead of his behavior, and he does it without ever signaling to the audience that he knows. That is a genuinely difficult performance to sustain across five years, and the volume of the arguments it generated is the proof it worked.
Film has used him more conventionally. Escape Room (2019) put him in a studio horror ensemble. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) made him Payback and gave him roughly the characterization a callsign implies. Somebody I Used to Know (2023) and Freaky Tales (2025), where he plays Sleepy Floyd, are the more interesting picks. Television has stayed the better home: Franklin Thomas in Mrs. America (2020), Colin Dobbs in All Her Fault (2025), Jay Brown in Running Point, and a very straight-faced Jesus in History of the World: Part II.

Where to start with Jay Ellis
Nothing else here competes with Insecure. Lawrence is the role that shows what he can do with ambiguity, and the series is good enough that you will not feel you are doing homework. Top Gun: Maverick is the crowd-pleaser and the easiest hour of his work to enjoy, even if Payback is more callsign than character. Escape Room is the popcorn horror one. Then take Mrs. America, where the period setting forces a far more restrained performance out of him, and Freaky Tales, which is the strangest thing he has agreed to do. The Game is where it started, though it is a long way back and the show is not really about him.
