Jemaine Clement
Jemaine Clement is an actor, born 1974.
Jemaine Clement's comic register is Wellington deadpan: a low, slow delivery that lets an absurd sentence land as though it were entirely reasonable. He and Bret McKenzie built Flight of the Conchords as a musical comedy act first, releasing albums, then turned it into a television series for the BBC and HBO about two New Zealanders failing to make it in New York. It collected six Primetime Emmy nominations and it works because neither man ever plays for sympathy.
What We Do in the Shadows is the larger achievement. Clement co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred with Taika Waititi in 2014, taking flatshare comedy and vampires and refusing to treat either half as a joke that needs explaining. He then developed it into the FX series and, in Wellington Paranormal, a police procedural spun out of a couple of minutes of the film. That is a remarkable amount of franchise to build from one very cheap movie.
As a performer for hire he is mostly a voice, and a lucrative one: Nigel the cockatoo in the Rio films, Tamatoa in Moana, Sauron in The Lego Batman Movie, Boris the Animal under heavy prosthetics in Men in Black 3, and Dr Garvin in the Avatar sequels. The pattern is consistent. Give him a villain who is vain rather than frightening and he will find several more laughs in it than the script contains. He also created the 2024 Time Bandits series, which suggests the appetite for building things has not faded.

Where to start with Jemaine Clement
What We Do in the Shadows first, and it is not close. Four vampires arguing about the washing-up is a premise that should collapse in ten minutes, and it holds for ninety because everyone plays it completely straight.
Flight of the Conchords next, for the songs and for the two-man rhythm the rest of his career is built on. If the film left you wanting more of the world, the What We Do in the Shadows series is the rare adaptation that justifies itself, and Wellington Paranormal is the loose, silly companion piece.
Eagle vs Shark is the early New Zealand film worth digging out, awkward in a way the later work smooths over.
Among the voice roles, Moana gives him the showstopper and Men in Black 3 gives him the only genuinely menacing thing he has ever done.
The New Zealand work
The films and shows made with Taika Waititi and the Conchords, which is the actual body of work. The Shadows film is better than the American series it spawned, and Wellington Paranormal is the underseen spin-off.
The voice work
Tamatoa in Moana is the best of these by a distance and gets the best song in the film. The Rio films give him a cockatoo villain across two pictures, and the rest are the reliable studio animation paydays.
The live-action films
Hollywood mostly casts him as a villain or an oddity. Legion is the exception and the most interesting dramatic work he has done, and Gentlemen Broncos is the cult film that his fans defend hardest.
