Jennifer Jason Leigh is an actor, born 1962.
Jennifer Jason Leigh's breakthrough was Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a teen comedy in which her storyline is not funny at all, and that turned out to be the shape of everything after it. Through the late 1980s and 1990s she took roles most actors of her generation would not touch: a prostitute in Last Exit to Brooklyn, a naive young woman taken up by a con man in Miami Blues, the roommate in Single White Female, Dorothy Parker at the far end of a bottle. None of these women are interested in being liked.
The technique is total and slightly alarming. She rebuilds her voice for every part, sometimes past the point of comfort, and she is willing to look bad on camera in a way that was rare then and is rare now. Her comic work gets underrated because of it: Amy Archer in The Hudsucker Proxy is a full-speed 1940s newspaper-picture performance, and it is very funny.
After a quieter stretch she came back through Tarantino, playing Daisy Domergue in The Hateful Eight chained to a bounty hunter for three hours and dominating every frame she occupies, which brought Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Anomalisa arrived the same year and is the exact opposite, a voice performance built almost entirely out of hesitation. Television has since given her steady, excellent supporting work in Fargo, Atypical and Patrick Melrose. Four decades in, there is still no wasted phase in the filmography.

Where to start with Jennifer Jason Leigh
The Hateful Eight is the loudest argument and the easiest starting point: she spends the film beaten, chained and visibly enjoying herself more than anyone else in the room, and she walks off with a Tarantino ensemble, which is not a small feat.
Pair it with Anomalisa, released the same year, where the entire job is done with her voice and a great deal of hesitation. Those two together show the range better than any other pair in her catalogue.
For the older work, Single White Female is the famous one and still genuinely unnerving, and The Hudsucker Proxy is the corrective for anyone who thinks she only does damage. eXistenZ is the Cronenberg, strange and clammy and very much her register. On television Fargo gives her a superb late role, and The Machinist is where to go for her at her most tender.
The performances that cost something
This is the run she is known for, and it is a hard watch taken together. Last Exit to Brooklyn and Bastard Out of Carolina are the two that critics still cite, and neither has ever been comfortable viewing.
Auteur ensembles
Altman twice, the Coens once, Cronenberg once and Charlie Kaufman twice, including Lisa in Anomalisa, which is a voice performance and one of her best. She is a director's actress and the ensembles are where that shows most clearly.
The late-career second wind
After a fallow stretch she came back as a character actress and the work got better. The Hateful Eight got the nomination, Fargo and Patrick Melrose are the television, and Good Time is the one to watch first.
