Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain is an actor, born 1977.

Juilliard first, then a television holding deal, then several years of guest spots and stage work that nobody outside New York noticed. Chastain made her film debut in Jolene in 2008 and then had one of the strangest breakout years on record: in 2011 she turned up in The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, Coriolanus and The Help, films shot in a backlog and released almost on top of each other. The Help brought her first Academy Award nomination.

Her particular gift is conviction. She plays women who are certain in rooms full of men who are not, and she does it without the brittleness usually written into those parts. Maya in Zero Dark Thirty is the purest version: a decade of obsession compressed into a performance that is mostly listening and refusing to blink. Miss Sloane and Molly's Game run the same engine in different costumes.

She has been just as interested in gothic and genre work, and that is where she is loosest: Crimson Peak, Mama, the adult Beverly Marsh in It Chapter Two. The Academy Award finally arrived for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a role built out of prosthetics and unnervingly sincere warmth, and one that could have been a cruel impression in other hands. She produces much of her own work now, and the choices have got odder and better for it.

Where to start with Jessica Chastain

Zero Dark Thirty is the first stop. It is her most complete performance and the clearest argument for what she does, an entire film carried by somebody refusing to be talked out of a hunch.

For the range, The Eyes of Tammy Faye is the Oscar winner and the least vain thing she has done, while Take Shelter is the small film where she plays the person who has to live inside somebody else's crisis. Molly's Game is the most purely entertaining, all forward motion and dialogue.

Genre viewers should go to Crimson Peak, where she is having an enormous amount of fun as the most frightening thing in a haunted house, and Mama for the same instincts on a smaller budget. Interstellar and The Martian are the big studio entries, and both give her less than she can do.

The Oscar-nominated work

Three nominations and one win. Zero Dark Thirty is the best of them and is almost entirely restraint, a performance built out of watching. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is the opposite, buried under prosthetics, and it is the one that won.

The independent films

The run of small films that arrived at once in 2011 and made her name from nowhere. Take Shelter is the best of them by a distance, and The Tree of Life uses her almost as an idea rather than a character.

The horror and genre work

Chastain takes more genre work than her reputation suggests. Crimson Peak is the best looking film she has been in, and Mama is the one that shows she can carry straight horror.

The recent dramas

The later work, mostly serious and mostly about women under pressure. The Good Nurse is the best of them, and Scenes from a Marriage is the most punishing thing she has done.
