Jessica Hecht
Jessica Hecht is an actor, born 1965.
Jessica Hecht is a stage actress who has built a screen career almost entirely out of supporting parts, which is harder than it sounds. Born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1965, she has three Tony nominations, for A View from the Bridge in 2010, Summer, 1976 in 2023 and Eureka Day in 2025, and a Primetime Emmy nomination for playing Karen in Special.
The particular thing she does is make politeness feel like a held breath. Her characters are unfailingly reasonable and something is always straining underneath. Susan Bunch on Friends could have been a running joke and instead reads as the most stable relationship on the show. Gretchen Schwartz on Breaking Bad is the person who remembers what Walter White actually walked away from, and she settles the argument the whole series is having without once raising her voice.
Film has used her as the reasonable adult in the room. She is Victoria in Sideways, Helena in Whatever Works, Emma Goldman in J. Edgar, Amy in Dan in Real Life, Lila Vogel in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and one of the wives in the concentration-camp drama The Grey Zone. Television keeps her in the same register, as Sonya Barzel in The Sinner, Aunt Lavinia in Dickinson, the lawyer Nancy Erika Smith in The Loudest Voice and Rob's mother in High Fidelity.
She has not slowed down. The Home and Eleanor the Great both landed in 2025, with American Classic due in 2026.

Where to start with Jessica Hecht
Breaking Bad is where most people meet her, and it is a fine demonstration of what an actress can do by declining to perform hurt. Watch her opposite Walter White and notice how little she has to do to win the exchange.
Friends is the other famous credit and worth revisiting, because Susan is played with real warmth in a show that could easily have used her as a punchline. After that go to The Sinner, where the restraint tips into something colder, and Sideways, which casts her as the ex-wife whose ordinary decency is the worst news in the film.
If you want the stage actress, Special is the one that earned the Emmy nomination, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood hands her a grieving scene that most of the cast would have overplayed.
