John Carney
John Carney is a director, born 1972.
A musician who directs, Carney has spent his career rewriting the same scene: two people who cannot say a thing to each other say it into a song instead. He came out of Dublin, co-created the television drama Bachelors Walk, and made the crime picture On the Edge in 2001 before finding the subject that would define him.
Once, in 2007, was shot cheaply on the street with two musicians rather than actors, and it worked because the songs carry the emotional information the dialogue withholds. That film reset expectations for what a musical could look like, and everything since has been a variation on its method. Begin Again moved the idea to New York with stars and studio gloss. Sing Street took it back to 1980s Dublin and a school band, which is the funniest and warmest of them. Flora and Son found it again in a Dublin flat and a guitar lesson over a laptop.
He also served as showrunner and executive producer on Modern Love, an anthology built from newspaper columns, which is the closest he has come to working outside music. Power Ballad is due in 2026. The obvious criticism of Carney is that he keeps making one film; the fair response is that most directors never find one worth repeating, and the small-scale versions are consistently better than the expensive ones.

Where to start with John Carney
Once first, always. It is the purest statement of what Carney does, made for almost nothing, performed by musicians, and it earns every emotional move because the songs do the arguing.
Then Sing Street, which is the most enjoyable film he has made: a 1980s Dublin school band, brilliant original songs, and a genuinely unsentimental view of what home looks like when you want to leave it.
Flora and Son is the recent one and better than its quiet reception suggests. Begin Again is the glossy American version, pleasant but the least of the three musicals, and worth seeing mainly to understand what the smaller budgets were protecting. Modern Love is the anthology television, On the Edge the early film before he found the formula, and Power Ballad is next.
