John Emmet Tracy

Thirty years of work, most of it inside other people's scenes. John Emmet Tracy is an American Canadian actor with the resume of a genuine working professional: the surgeon in If I Stay, the bank manager in Fifty Shades Freed, a palace footman in The BFG, a doctor in Grace. These are the parts that hold a film together and get cut from the trailer.

Television has treated him better. He was a series regular on the Syfy series Olympus as Pallas, and has held recurring roles as Enzo Lambert in iZombie, August Cartwright in Batwoman and Ellis Steele in Yellowstone. That last one is the most visible thing he does, in a show that runs almost entirely on people negotiating in rooms.

The clearest look at what he can do is American Mary, where he plays Detective Dolor, a character with a name nobody would invent twice and the only part here written with any real strangeness in it.

The rest is the honest middle of the industry: Hallmark-style mysteries including Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Very Foul Play, Moonlight in Vermont and Autumn in the Vineyard; horror in The Bad Seed, The Hollow Child and Beneath; and voice work, among it Thomas Jefferson in the game Assassin's Creed III, which is not among the credits listed here. There is also a long stage career that a screen credits list will never show you.
