Judy Greer
Judy Greer is an actor, born 1975.
Judy Greer arrived as the sidekick and stayed long enough to become a genre unto herself. Her breakout was Fern Mayo in the 1999 high school satire Jawbreaker, followed by What Women Want in 2000, and from there she spent two decades as the funniest person standing slightly to the left of the star: 13 Going on 30, Elizabethtown, 27 Dresses, Love & Other Drugs.
What she does better than almost anyone is play a woman who is three seconds ahead of the room and knows it will not help her. Lucy Wyman in 13 Going on 30 is nominally the villain, but Greer plays her as someone exhausted by having to be the antagonist in another woman's story, which is why the part still lands. The same trick works in Adaptation, where she has one waitress scene and makes it the warmest thing in the film.
The later career has been stranger and better. She spent two Planet of the Apes films acting through a performance capture rig as Cornelia, communicating almost entirely without speech. She became a fixture of blockbuster domestic life, the sister in Jurassic World and the ex-wife in Ant-Man. And in the Halloween revival she finally got the weight, playing Karen as a woman whose whole childhood was survival drill.
Alongside that runs a long voice career as Cheryl Tunt on Archer, where the leash comes off entirely and she is allowed to be genuinely unhinged.

Where to start with Judy Greer
Start with 13 Going on 30. It is the cleanest showcase of the Greer method: a supporting role written as a punchline, played as a person, and it steals the film from a very good lead performance. Then go straight to Arrested Development and Archer to hear what she does with comedy when nobody is asking her to be likeable.
For the dramatic register, The Descendants and Grandma are the two to pick, both small parts that adjust the temperature of the whole scene. Halloween is where she gets to carry dread rather than jokes, and it is the best argument for casting her as a lead. Completists should try Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a performance delivered through motion capture and almost no dialogue at all.
The romantic comedies
A decade as the best friend, and she is reliably funnier than the leads she is supporting. 13 Going on 30 is the one people quote, and Jawbreaker is the early cult film where she gets the closest thing to a lead.
The franchises
A second career inside very large films, usually in parts asking for warmth rather than screen time. The Planet of the Apes films are the interesting ones: she plays a chimpanzee in motion capture and does most of it without words.
The television and the dramatic work
Kitty Sanchez in Arrested Development is the funniest thing on this list, and Cheryl in Archer runs it close across fifteen seasons. The Descendants is the dramatic turn, and the Halloween sequels finally handed her a lead.
