Kari Wahlgren is an actor, born 1977.

Kari Wahlgren came out of Kansas and into the Los Angeles anime dubbing rooms, which in the early 2000s was one of the few places a new voice actor could get volume work quickly. Her break was Haruko in FLCL, a performance pitched somewhere between a sugar rush and a threat, and the credits stacked up fast from there: Fuu in Samurai Champloo, Saya in Blood+, Saber across the Fate adaptations, Celty in Durarara.

What the credit list hides is register control. The same actor plays Charmcaster's teenage sneer in Ben 10, works through several of the Tinker Bell films, and takes a one-scene part in Batman: The Killing Joke, and none of them sound like a costume worn over the others. She is also, repeatedly, the voice a production hires when it needs a woman to be genuinely unpleasant, which is rarer in animation casting than it ought to be.

By the 2010s she was everywhere in American animation without being a name anyone could place: Gravity Falls, Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites, Young Justice, We Bare Bears, the DC direct-to-video line, the Resident Evil computer-animated films, Ben 10 again. Paperman even credits her on a short with no spoken dialogue in it at all, where the entire performance is breath and laughter.

Where to start with Kari Wahlgren

The anime roles that made her name sit outside this catalogue, so the honest entry point here is Ben 10, where Charmcaster recurs often enough to show the range she can find inside one character.

After that, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is the strongest single thing on the list, an adult animated film that gives her something to act rather than a gag to land. Young Justice is the best of the ensemble superhero work and INVINCIBLE the meanest; Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites are where she does utility work faster and better than anyone else in the booth. Gravity Falls hands her a local news anchor and roughly six lines, and she gets a laugh out of all of them.
