Kate Vernon
Kate Vernon is an actor, born 1961.
Playing the snob is a craft, and Vernon learned it early. Born in Toronto in 1961, she was Lorraine Prescott on Falcon Crest in 1984 and 1985, and then Benny Hanson in Pretty in Pink, the popular girl written to be looked down on for looking down on people. In a film that runs on class resentment, she is the one asked to embody it, and she does it without softening the character into an excuse.
The eighties gave her exploitation work too, Chained Heat and Roadhouse 66, which is the standard route for a young actress in that decade and worth naming rather than tidying away. Malcolm X in 1992 gave her the most serious dramatic assignment of her career, as Sophia.
Battlestar Galactica is where it all pays off. Ellen Tigh was written as a liability, a character the audience is invited to find irritating, and Vernon plays her without once asking for sympathy or signalling that she knows better than the part. It is the rare case of an actress trusting that appetite, vanity and self-destruction are enough to hold attention, and the series kept finding more use for her because of it.
Since then she has worked steadily in genre television, Condor, Another Life and a 2026 series, plus the Battlestar companion film. It is a career of characters other actors would have tried to make likeable.

Where to start with Kate Vernon
Come for Battlestar Galactica. Ellen Tigh is one of the great uncomfortable supporting performances in modern science fiction television, and Vernon never flinches from what the character is. Save Battlestar Galactica: The Plan for after the series rather than before it.
Pretty in Pink is the other essential, a small role that half the audience still remembers by name forty years on. Malcolm X is the most substantial film in the list and the least like the rest of it. Falcon Crest is prime-time soap in its purest form and shows where the technique came from. For recent work, Condor is the better-made thriller and Another Life the more ridiculous. Chained Heat is included for completeness, not recommendation.
