Katharine Isabelle is an actor, born 1981.
Horror got her early. Katharine Isobel Murray, born in Vancouver in 1981 and billed as Katharine Isabelle, took a small role on MacGyver in 1989 and was still a teenager when Ginger Snaps arrived in 2000. Ginger Fitzgerald ran across three films, and the scream queen label the press attached to her afterwards has been stuck there ever since.
The label undersells what she actually does. She is not a screamer; she is very good at contempt, at playing women who find the situation beneath them right up to the point where it stops being beneath them. Freddy vs Jason, Carrie and Disturbing Behavior used her in the supporting slot the genre reserves for pretty and doomed. Ginger Snaps and American Mary handed her the title role, and the gap between those two modes is the whole argument for her: given the lead, she plays a person with an agenda rather than a victim with a countdown.
The second half of the career has been steady character work rather than a breakout. Insomnia and Bad Times at the El Royale put her in serious ensembles, Hannibal gave her Margot Verger, The Order made her Vera Stone across a supernatural series, and she has kept one foot in low-budget Canadian horror the entire time. TRON: Ares in 2025 and Backrooms in 2026 are the most visible things she has done in years.

Where to start with Katharine Isabelle
Ginger Snaps is the entry point and the argument at once. It is a Canadian horror film from 2000 and her performance in it is funnier and nastier than the genre usually permits, which is why the role stuck to her for twenty-five years. Follow it with Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed and then Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, the prequel, which is the strangest of the three.
After that, American Mary is the essential title: she has the title role and the film rests on her, and it is the clearest evidence that she should have been given more leads. Hannibal is where a wider audience found her, playing Margot Verger with the control the film roles rarely asked for. Freddy vs. Jason is the guilty pleasure, and Bad Times at the El Royale is the one to show someone who thinks she only works in horror.
