Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington is an actor, born 1977.
For most of a decade Washington was the good actor in other people's films. She grew up in the Bronx, made her feature debut in the 2000 drama Our Song, and then took what came. She was Alicia Masters in the 2005 Fantastic Four and its sequel, Della Bea Robinson in Ray, Kay Amin in The Last King of Scotland and Broomhilda in Django Unchained: a run of parts defined by their proximity to a louder character.
Scandal changed the terms. Olivia Pope ran on ABC from 2012 to 2018 and asked her to carry every scene at high speed while playing a woman whose entire profession is control, which is a much harder combination than the show's plotting made it look. Two Emmy nominations came from it.
Her best work since has been in the register Scandal could not accommodate: quiet, contained, faintly cold. Confirmation asked her to play Anita Hill under hostile questioning and she declined every opportunity to editorialise. Little Fires Everywhere is the sharpest thing she has done, a performance assembled almost entirely out of withheld information. She holds a Primetime Emmy, two Golden Globe nominations and two Tony nominations, was on Time's 100 list in 2014, and by 2018 Forbes had her as the eighth highest-paid actress in television. These days she is as likely to be producing as starring.

Where to start with Kerry Washington
Scandal is unavoidable, and give it three episodes rather than one: the show takes a while to find its speed, and Washington is the reason it eventually does. If that register is not for you, go straight to Little Fires Everywhere, which is the best acting she has put on screen, built almost wholly from things the character will not say.
For the films, Ray and The Last King of Scotland are the early proof, two small parts opposite Oscar-winning leads, both held without strain. Django Unchained is the most-seen and the least interesting use of her. Confirmation is the one to seek out, a drama about a real woman being disbelieved in public, played without a drop of sentiment. American Son is the stage-derived one, and Save the Last Dance is where a lot of people first noticed her.
Scandal and the television
Olivia Pope made her the first Black woman to lead a network drama in almost forty years, and the television since has been chosen carefully. Little Fires Everywhere is the best acting in the group and she produced it herself.
The film work
A decade of good supporting film work before the television took over. Ray and The Last King of Scotland are the serious ones, Django Unchained is the biggest, and Save the Last Dance is where a lot of people first noticed her.
The studio and voice work
The commercial end, which she has always taken on alongside everything else. The Fantastic Four films gave her Alicia Masters twice, and the recent musicals and animation are the ones her own children can watch.
