Kimberly Brooks

Brooks has been working in game recording booths since the mid-nineties, and that is where most of her best-known roles live: Ashley Williams across the Mass Effect trilogy, Barbara Gordon in the Batman: Arkham games, Shinobu in No More Heroes, Robin in Subnautica: Below Zero. None of those are films, so a catalogue like this one shows you about half of her.

The animation half is still substantial, and it turns on one asset: she has an unusually low, gravelled register for a woman working in children's television, which makes her the call for characters who are physically overwhelming. Jasper in Steven Universe is the best example anywhere. Jasper is a soldier whose entire personality is contempt, and Brooks plays her without a shred of self-pity, which is the only reason the show's eventual sympathy for her lands at all.

Around that sit hundreds of smaller jobs, and they are the actual career: Luna of the eco-goth band the Hex Girls across two decades of Scooby-Doo, Buena Girl in Mucha Lucha, Bumblebee in Teen Titans Go!, Sky in Arcane, two different villains in a Wonder Woman film, recurring parts on South Park and The Simpsons, additional voices on a large share of the animated features of the last decade. It is a working voice actor's filmography. No single credit explains it, and the volume is the point.
