Lo Mutuc

Lo Mutuc came up through Los Angeles comedy and arrived on screen inside the Judd Apatow orbit, playing a stoner called Jodi in Knocked Up in 2007 and then the same character again in This Is 40 five years later. In 2009 they anchored Paper Heart, a mock documentary built around a version of themself trying to work out whether love is real, which is still the most personal thing in the filmography.

The screen work since has divided between medical drama and cartoons. Dr. Chi Park arrived on House for the show's last two seasons, a blunt diagnostician joining a series that had largely run out of new ways to be blunt, and Mutuc gave her a stubbornness the ensemble had not had. The animation is the bigger body of work by far: the Rubies across Steven Universe and Steven Universe Future, Chloe Park in We Bare Bears, Alice in Summer Camp Island, Mai in Next Gen, Larry in StuGo. The Rubies are the showcase, because that is one performer playing several soldiers of identical rank who are supposed to be indistinguishable and audibly are not.

Elsewhere they turn up as the small strange presence in bigger films: Safowa in The Disaster Artist, Ginger in Always Be My Maybe, Abbey in The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Charlotte Xie in an episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, Judy in Time Bandits. They are a musician and a writer as well, and the through line across all of it is a refusal to smooth anything out.
