Lucy Dacus writes some of the most precise lyrics in indie rock, mostly about specific people who are presumably still alive and can presumably recognise themselves. She is a third of boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, which won three Grammys, and the solo records are the better work. She grew up in Richmond, was adopted, and writes about faith and family with more curiosity than resentment.

Where to start with Lucy Dacus
The catalogue holds one record and it is the right one. Home Video came out in 2021, is built almost entirely out of specific memories from a religious adolescence in Virginia, and it is the album where the writing gets genuinely unsparing. Historian is the earlier one worth hearing and Forever Is a Feeling is the recent one, but start here.
