Maggie Rogers became famous through a video of Pharrell Williams listening to her song in a masterclass and visibly not knowing what to say, which is a strange way to start a career and one she has been articulate about resenting. She had already made two independent albums. She later took a master's in religion and public life at Harvard, and the songwriting has a folk structure underneath the production that the viral moment obscured.

The catalogue holds one record. Surrender is the second major album and the loudest thing she has made, built around a kind of controlled abandon that the debut only hinted at.
