Mahershala Ali
Mahershala Ali is an actor, born 1974.
Ali spent most of a decade as a working television actor before anyone treated him as a film star. There was an MFA from New York University, then regular roles on Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix, then the science fiction series The 4400, then Remy Danton in House of Cards, which brought his first Primetime Emmy nomination. His first substantial film part came in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 2008.
What he does is stillness. Ali almost never raises his voice, and he gets his effects by making everyone else in the scene adjust to his tempo. Juan in Moonlight is the clearest case, a drug dealer who becomes the only tender adult in a boy's life, built in roughly twenty minutes of screen time with no speech about any of it. Don Shirley in Green Book is the opposite temperature, all controlled precision and buried anger. Both won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor two years apart, and both are really lead performances squeezed into a supporting frame.
He followed the second Oscar with Wayne Hays in the third season of True Detective, playing the same man at three ages, which brought him a Primetime Emmy. Since then the work has mixed prestige with franchise: Uncle Aaron in the Spider-Verse films, Leave the World Behind, Jurassic World Rebirth. He is one of the few actors who improves a blockbuster simply by lowering the volume inside it.

Where to start with Mahershala Ali
Moonlight first, without argument. Juan is the performance that changed his career, a short role that reorganises an entire film around itself.
Then Green Book, a much more conventional picture that he is quietly at war with; watch how little he gives the script's easier moments. True Detective is the largest piece of work here, seven hours of one man at three ages, and the best case that he should be carrying leads more often.
For lighter viewing, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gets more out of a handful of lines than most voice casting manages across a whole film, and Hidden Figures shows the warmth he is rarely asked for. Leave the World Behind is the recent one worth your evening.
The Oscar work
Two supporting wins in three years, which almost nobody manages. Moonlight uses him for about a third of the film and it is the best thing on this list. Green Book is the more conventional performance and the more contested film.
The television
True Detective is the most sustained work he has done, carrying a full season across three timelines and several decades of one man's memory. House of Cards and Luke Cage are the earlier long runs.
The blockbusters
The large films, where he is usually the calm one. The Spider-Verse films give him a voice role with a genuine turn in it, and Jurassic World Rebirth is the recent studio work.
