Mamoudou Athie
Mamoudou Athie is an actor, born 1988.
His first widely seen job was an impersonation: Athie played Grandmaster Flash in Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down in 2016, which meant standing in for a living legend in a show about the invention of a genre. Born in Mauritania in 1988, he is an American actor who came up through stage work before the screen career started, and it shows in how he handles stillness.
The thing he does better than almost anyone in his generation is withheld intelligence. Athie plays men who are visibly thinking and deliberately not saying, which is why he keeps being cast as the calm professional in a room full of panic: Jared in The Circle, A.J. Parker in The Front Runner, Rodrigo in Underwater, Ramsay Cole in Jurassic World Dominion, Hal Dockins in The Burial. In several of those films he is the most interesting thing on screen and the script has not noticed.
The two features that actually use him are Uncorked, where he finally gets a lead and a family to argue with, and Black Box, a small science fiction thriller that asks for grief and confusion in equal measure. Archive 81 gave him the same kind of room across a season of television.
Since then the range has widened rather than narrowed. He voiced Wade in Pixar's Elemental, took a triple role in Yorgos Lanthimos's Kinds of Kindness, with The Drama, Wardriver and By Design on the slate. He remains an actor whose best film is probably still ahead of him.

Where to start with Mamoudou Athie
Two films make the case. Uncorked is the warmest thing he has done and the only one that lets him be openly hopeful, and Black Box is the opposite, a low-budget genre piece that hands him the entire emotional load and trusts him with it. Watch them in that order.
Archive 81 is the long-form version, The Burial the sharpest supporting turn, and Kinds of Kindness the strangest, since Lanthimos casts him three separate times and asks for something different each go.
Elemental is the household-name credit and a genuinely good vocal performance, played much softer than animation usually allows. The Get Down is where it started. Jurassic World Dominion is on the page because it is the biggest film he has been in, not because it is the best use of him, and the gap between those two facts is the story of his career so far.
