Margaret Mazzantini
Margaret Mazzantini is an Italian-Irish writer and actress. She began acting in 1980, making her debut in the cult horror film Antropophagus, and worked in television and theatre before writing became her main career. Her novels include Non ti muovere, filmed by her husband Sergio Castellitto with Penelope Cruz in the lead, and Venuto al mondo, also adapted with Cruz. She has won Campiello awards and been nominated for a Goya. The books are emotionally direct in a way Anglophone critics sometimes find excessive: first-person confessions, medical settings, families under maximum pressure, pitched at a level most novelists reserve for a climax.

Where to start with Margaret Mazzantini
Non ti muovere is the one to read, a surgeon's confession told across a single night while his daughter lies in surgery, and the book that made her reputation; Don't Move is the same novel in English. Twice Born is the bigger, more ambitious one, a mother and son returning to Sarajevo. Il catino di zinco is the quiet first novel, and Anthropophagous the video nasty she acted in before she wrote anything.
