Mario Adorf
Mario Adorf is an actor, born 1930.
Adorf worked across the whole map of postwar European cinema, and the credits here read like a passport. He was in German productions from the mid-1950s, including the war film 08/15, then became a fixture of the 1960s Karl May westerns as the villain Frederic Santer in Apache Gold. Hollywood borrowed him for Sergeant Gomez in Sam Peckinpah's Major Dundee. Italy borrowed him for far longer.
For most of a decade he was one of the reliable heavies of Italian genre film: Berto Consalvi in Dario Argento's debut The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, the giallo Short Night of Glass Dolls, and above all Fernando Di Leo's crime pictures, where he is the brutal enforcer Rocco Musco in Caliber 9 and then the hunted small-timer Luca Canali in The Italian Connection. Those two roles show the trick he had. A big, loud, sweating physical presence that could turn, in a single beat, into something wounded.
Home again in the New German Cinema, he got the parts that lasted: Alfred Matzerath in Volker Schlondorff's The Tin Drum, the bullying police inspector Beizmenne in The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, the businessman Schuckert for Fassbinder in Lola. He kept working long after, including the voice of Blaubart in the animated crime film Felidae and Captain Lukas in Smilla's Sense of Snow. At home he won two German Film Awards for acting and an honorary award for his contribution to German cinema. He died in 2026.

Where to start with Mario Adorf
Start with The Tin Drum. Adorf plays Alfred Matzerath, a grocer whose ordinary decency curdles under National Socialism, and it is the performance his late reputation rests on: loud, sentimental, weak, and never once asking for sympathy it has not earned.
Then go sideways into the Italian run, which is where he is most fun. Caliber 9 and The Italian Connection are the pair to watch together, the first with him as pure menace, the second with him as the man being chased across Milan. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage gives him a smaller slice of a famous debut, and Short Night of Glass Dolls is stranger than either.
For the German half, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum has him as the policeman leaning on a woman the press has already convicted, and Lola drops him into a Fassbinder colour scheme he suits better than you would expect. Fedora is a footnote, a few minutes of Billy Wilder's last act, but completists will want it.
