Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye was an American singer, songwriter and producer, born in Washington in 1939 to a Pentecostal preacher whose violence shaped much of his life. He came up as a session drummer and duet partner at Motown before fighting the label for the right to write and produce himself. What's Going On, which Berry Gordy initially refused to release, became one of the most influential records ever made. He was shot by his father in 1984, the day before his forty-fifth birthday.
