He is an American actor and a theatre director, and the screen credits sit alongside a Broadway record that would be the headline for most people: Lennox in Sam Gold's 2022 production of Macbeth, Dr. Rank in Jamie Lloyd's 2023 revival of A Doll's House.
On television he is best known as Dr. Gabriel Fife in Private Practice, a doctor written as prickly, competitive and hard to like, which is a more generous part than it sounds. The show let him be an obstacle rather than a lesson, and it is the rare medical-drama role that is never softened for the audience.
Since then he has worked steadily in one-season prestige television, playing a priest in Let the Right One In, a mission doctor in Away, and turning up in The Red Line and Black Rabbit. Private Practice is where the most of him is, provided you can tolerate a network medical drama's habits to get there; Gabriel Fife is the one character in it allowed to stay consistently unpleasant, which makes him the most watchable person on the ward.
Let the Right One In is the better piece of television, a patient adaptation of a very cold story, and his priest is one of the quieter pleasures in it. After that, Away is handsome and earnest and ideal for a long flight, while The Red Line is a serious Chicago-set drama that got far less attention than it deserved. The Dilemma is a bit part in a studio comedy, and Ponderosa is the newest title on the list, so the screen half of the career is very much in motion.
